A Tiny Baby Vulture Is Raised By Two Fathers

A small newborn chick has joined the family of two male griffon vultures at the Artis Amsterdam Royal Zoo in the Netherlands.

The LGBT couple has been together for years and alternated sleeping on the egg until it hatched last month. Job van Tol, a zookeeper, told the BBC: “They always construct a nest together, connect and mate together.”

When zookeepers discovered the abandoned egg, they placed it in an incubator while searching for the ideal pair to adopt it.

However, no other vulture couples appeared to be interested in preserving the tiny egg’s life.

“It was a bit of a gamble since there were no assurances of success,” Van Tol said, “but we felt, finally, this is their moment.”

And the pair didn’t waste any time taking advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The two fathers are feeding and carefully caring for their chick, who is now 20 days old.

This isn’t the first time an animal has shown signs of homosexuality. It is found in a variety of birds, including penguins and a variety of other species.

“Vultures do everything the same as certain penguin species, they rotate all the duties,” Van Tol explained. “Females deposit the eggs, although they mate and forage for food as a group. Males are bred with a sense of responsibility.”
