A Man Pushes A Basket Of Stray Puppies Into A Woman’s Arms — And Then Walks Away

Tamara Johnston, who was feeding a bunch of stray dogs in Songkhla, Thailand, was approached by a guy.

“He was pointing, and I assumed he was asking me to feed my street pups in this specific location,” Johnston, founder of Thai Street Paws Rescue, told The Dodo. “Then I heard them say something in Thai about puppies.”

A man holding a plastic mesh basket approached Johnston. Three squirmy puppies were inside, while another dog from the same litter was wandering wild on adjacent streets.

Johnston remarked, “My heart plummeted.”

Johnston was hesitant to help the puppies, who were around two months old. She is presently caring for about 100 dogs in Thailand, and she is having difficulty affording food and medical treatment. She also has a small team to assist her, but she is responsible for the most of the job.

At the same time, she couldn’t turn away, especially when the man threatened to dump them if she didn’t accept them.

“These pups were terrified, and they were staring at me,” Johnston explained. “They were in desperate need of assistance.”

While the origins of the pups are unknown, Johnston believes they were born on the streets and that the man intended to get rid of them.

“It’s very typical here that once puppies reach a certain age and begin to stray… people don’t want them around any longer,” Johnston explained. “Because they become older and start reproducing at that point.”

There are many more puppies living on the streets in Thailand than can possibly be rescued and rehomed. However, if these puppies were to remain on the streets, they would most likely perish quickly.

“These pups would either be abandoned and ran over, or he would dump them as he said he would,” Johnston explained. “They didn’t stand a chance since they were so small.”

The puppies were returned to Johnston’s sanctuary, where they are being quarantined while being tested for infectious illnesses.

“For the time being, they appear to be fine,” Johnston added. “There are a couple of people that are underweight. Fleas and ticks have infested them. We basically fed them again since they were starving.”

The puppies will be available for adoption anywhere in the globe as they get older and stronger.

Johnston stated, “I really want to find these boys homes as quickly as possible.”

These babies are now secure, but there are hundreds more dogs and puppies in need of assistance, and Johnston cannot manage the issue alone.

“Instead of providing a helping hand, people here often take photographs of me and laugh,” Johnston told The Dodo. “People will beg for my assistance without providing any in return. So, in addition to my real job of rescuing and rehabilitating animals, I also have to deal with a slew of external challenges that just add to the difficulty of my job. But I’m tenacious, and I’ll never give up on these dogs, or any other animal in need of my assistance.”
