Shelter Dog Refuses To Be Adopted Without His Food Bowl

After refusing to leave a family’s backyard in Memphis, Tennessee, Oliver was discovered as a stray. When animal control authorities approached him, he would jump over the fence and out of the yard, as if it were a game, as if it were a game. To catch him, they had to put up a humane trap and transport him to Memphis Animal Services.

Oliver’s new shelter pals could tell he’d had a home or someone looking after him at some time from the minute he arrived. He was bright and enjoyed food and treats, and he understood that if he listened and behaved properly, he would be lavished with them.

Katie Pemberton, community engagement specialist at Memphis Animal Services, told The Dodo, “I saw him the first day he came in, and he sat for me instantly before I even showed him I had goodies.” “Of course, when the snacks were brought out, he was much more eager to sit.” He pressed himself up to the bars of his kennels the more he got to know me, allowing me to pet him.”

Oliver was so fond of eating that he developed a strong attachment to his food dish, which he began to take about with him everywhere he went.

“Our field supervisor went by his kennel in our ACO intake room the first night he came here and observed him with his bowl in his mouth,” Pemberton said. “His charming technique worked because she gave him much more food!” When he went to his permanent kennel, he continued to do so. He spent the most of his time with his bowl in his mouth.”

It’s likely that someone in Oliver’s past taught him how to pick up his food dish as a joke. It’s also likely that he was hungry at one time and was concerned that if he lost sight of his food dish, he wouldn’t be fed again.

Oliver continued to bring his food dish around with him everywhere he went during his time at the shelter, and the shelter employees thought it was hilarious. They began photographing his habit and sharing them on social media, and it wasn’t long before the rest of the globe fell in love with Oliver as well.

“After Oliver’s images went viral, we had an unusual amount of questions about him – I wish every dog had as many people interested in adopting them,” Pemberton said.

Oliver’s bowl fixation drew a lot of attention, and he was eventually tracked down by his permanent family.

On April 16, Oliver was adopted and sent home with his new family, and he was ecstatic to learn that his food bowl would be joining him.
