The little Illinois native was diagnosed with juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma last year, a rare children brain tumor. Since then, Bryce has been fighting an uphill battle, with frequent trips to the hospital for testing and chemotherapy treatments.

Regardless of his personal difficulties, he never forgets about people in need, even on his birthday.

Bryce celebrated his sixth birthday in January with a gathering of family and friends. Rather than asking for gifts, he requested that people donate to his local animal shelter.

That’s basically what they did.

Bryce paid a visit to the Illinois Valley Animal Rescue (IVAR) last month, presenting the toys and supplies he’d set aside for needy dogs on his birthday.

Bryce Panther’s mother, Gina Panther, told The Dodo, “I’m really proud.” “He’s the kindest kid I’ve ever met.”

Bryce’s generosity, however, does not stop there. His visit to the shelter sparked his interest in becoming more active.

“IVAR appointed him an honorary volunteer, and his task was to play with all the cats,” Panther said. “He plans to volunteer once a week, or as often as he can when he feels up to it. He enjoys playing with the kitties and is looking forward to doing so again.”

Bryce is doing well to medication to keep the tumor under control, so maybe he’ll be able to continue volunteering at the shelter.

In the meanwhile, he has a dog at home to cheer him up when he travels.
