A Woodchuck Rides Across Massachusetts Lake On The Back Of A Golden Retriever And Gives The Dog A ‘Little Kiss.’

While swimming in a Massachusetts lake, a golden retriever found an unusual animal companion.

Lauren Russell and her dog, Wally, went swimming at Hickory Hills Lake in Lunenburg on May 16. Russell observed a woodchuck approaching Wally and attempting to get atop the pup’s back while the canine was dog paddling. She stated she and her spouse were taken aback by the surprise passenger and snapped a photo of it.

“He was about 100 meters out, and a woodchuck crept right up on his back, and he swam back to shore with him,” Russell told WCVB of the incident. “We were taken aback. It was incredible. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw what he did.”

Wally didn’t mind the woodchuck using him as a boat, according to Russell. The dog returned the hairy critter’s stare, but kept moving through the water without upsetting the smaller animal. The proprietor went on to say that she didn’t know whether the woodchuck caught a ride because it was “in trouble or just lazy.”

The good times didn’t stop there. They exchanged a “kiss” before parting ways when the 2-year-old dog brought his new companion back to shore.

“It came back to the island, hopped off his back, and then scurried away, and they kissed farewell,” Russell explained. “They liked touching snouts, and he bolted.”

According to his owner, Wally’s kind action isn’t unusual for a golden retriever.

“He’s nothing more than an angel. He adores all kinds of animals. It doesn’t get much better than Wally when it comes to young kids and individuals “she stated.
